October 2024: Wastewater System Smoke Testing

SFE Global will conduct smoke testing in the wastewater system in the Jennings Lodge area between Tuesday, October 1, and Friday, October 25.

You may notice"smoke" during testing, but it is actually an odorless vapor and is completely safe for humans, pets, or plants

Smoke testing is used to identify leaks and breaks in collection lines. The “smoke” used for testing is a water vapor that is completely safe for people, plants, and pets – it is white in color, non-toxic, odorless, non-staining, and does not pose a fire risk.

During testing, you may see smoke coming from plumbing vents, gutters, downspouts, or the ground while outside. This is normal and will stop once the testing is complete. The testing typically takes 2 to 4 hours.

Smoke should not enter your home if your plumbing is in good working order and your plumbing traps (the U-shaped pipes under each drain) are filled with water. You can run water into sinks, tubs, showers, and floor drains that are used infrequently to ensure your traps are filled with water. If you do notice smoke entering your home, it's important to locate the source as it means sewer gas, which can be dangerous, might also be able to enter.

For questions about the smoke testing work in your area, please email aaron.janicke@olws.org or call (503) 756-7629.
